January 2006 - Solo Exhibition - Chiaroscuro Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ

"The Dreams" - Part I. Two and Three dimensional mixed media works. Kindler tackles the subject of dreams in this exhibition. While the subjects are not all the result of sleeping dreams, they characterize a dreamlike state that exists when one is creating. The illusive quality of the subject and the dramatic lights and darks typical in a dream state is expressed utilizing the artists photography captured over the last year and incorporated into work with encaustics and oils. There is a large sculptural installation, primarily made of resin and metal, entitled "Recurring Dreams" that is the central focus in the exhibition.

May - June, 2005 - "The Journal" - Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle WA

Cornish College of the Arts was pleased to present The Journal, an exhibit of recent works in sculpture and two dimensional mixed media by Judith Kindler. The Journal was on view from May 10 through June 10, 2005.

Inspired by her journals from the past 30 years, Kindler documents questions she has asked of the I Ching (Book of Changes). The use of the I Ching accesses an ancient Chinese tradition, using a philosophical understanding of one’s position in relationship to a question posed. Revealing the trials and reflections of daily life, her work considers journal keeping as an ongoing dialogue with oneself.  Through visual exploration, the artist exposes the commonality of the human experience, our search for answers and insight as well as our blindness to personal failings.

Judith Kindler donated half of the proceeds from sales of works in this show to the Cornish Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships to the next generation of artists.

2004 Exhibitions:

April 2004 - "Defining Truth " (Part II)- Anne Reed Gallery

In this body of work, young women and girls populate Kindler's art. Kindler, in thick panels of transparent encaustic, holds captive mixed media imagery in sepia and cream, embellished with deliberate incised lines into the encaustic that interact with the figures in the panels. This exhibition brings new media into play, utilizing the artist's large format photography often electronically altered, then again altering with over-painting. Over 23 large two dimensional works will be exhibited, as well as numerous three-dimensional mixed media pieces and three conceptual installations which further illuminate the intention of the artist.

Kindler writes on the content of this work: "The idea of 'defining truth' is one that is filled with conflict for me, as looking for truths in life has always been an elusive obsession. This body of work deals with my struggle to find a common truth. Inspired by the writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein who parallels the idea of defined truths with games that bear explicit rules common to all the players, I have sought to understand contemporary life's many 'relative truths'. I've exposed my confusion, looking for the justification of war, understanding the general neglect of nurturing of the individual and rampant exploitation in our society, and questioning the quality of leadership. But perhaps the significant result of undertaking to paint such a personal topic, is that it has lead me to contemplate the process of discovery, confrontation, and ultimate acceptance of the 'games people play' - and my own relative agenda (game). Possibly, the conclusion is the 'game' is the one common truth; however, I cannot accept that."

October 2004 -" Alter Ego", Mixed Media Paintings, Photography, and Sculpture - Atelier 31, Seattle

Judith Kindler turns inward in this body of work entitled “Alter Ego”. What initially appears to be a reflection of her, takes on a life of its own. Kindler asks us to consider the idea of separate entities within the self as she places a miniature manikin, painted to look like a caricature of herself, into diverse situations. She refers to the manikin as “the other me.” Through photography, mixed media two and three dimensional works and sculptural installations, Kindler explores fear, forbidden sexuality, aging, letting go, transcendence, and the burden of artistic expectations in refreshing and often-times humorous light.

The two dimensional, mixed-media works continue in the combination of photo imagery, oils and encaustics that the artist introduced in “Defining Truth,” a body of work created from 2002 to 2004 and documented recently in the artist’s first book by the name “Defining Truth.” However, in this show the artist adds an exhibition of her large scale photographs on their own – uniquely combined into stories. In addition she introduces sculpture in a major installation entitled “Merging Egos” where 7 figurative sculptures in various stages of merging peer happily at a guest chair where the viewer is invited to sit and observe. Another sculpture “Confused” documents the conflicts inherent in self-image.

From appropriating images of Leonardo da Vinci, to referencing popular icons like Chanel Lipstick, the artist touches on the many obsessions, interests and concerns she has had throughout her life. Some might say this show is humorously narcissistic, but the universality of the ideas and emotions presented bring a new language forward that allows us all to consider and laugh at ourselves.
